What Happens in the First Session?
Sex therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping individuals and couples explore their sexual health, intimacy, and connection in a safe, professional setting. It’s designed to improve communication, increase comfort around sexual topics, and strengthen emotional and physical closeness.
In your first session, your therapist will take time to understand your goals, relationship dynamics, and comfort level. You’ll talk through what brought you in—whether it’s changes in desire, confidence, or communication—and begin setting collaborative goals for future sessions.
At Loving Choices Psychology, every session is grounded in evidence-based practices supported by scientific research. We blend compassion with clinical expertise to help you explore intimacy in your relationships.
How Can Sex Therapy Help Me Reconnect with My Partner?
Many couples come to sex therapy to rebuild intimacy after periods of distance or change.
Therapy provides a neutral, non-judgmental space to explore what each partner needs to feel close again. You’ll learn to communicate openly, rediscover attraction, and rebuild physical and emotional connection.
With guided support, sex therapy can help you feel more confident, connected, and fulfilled together.
Why Is Communication Important in A Relationship?
Healthy communication is the foundation of intimacy. When partners can express their thoughts and desires clearly, it reduces misunderstandings and builds trust.
In therapy, you’ll learn communication skills supported by scientific models like the Gottman Method, which strengthen empathy and improve how you handle conflict. Better communication often leads to renewed connection and more satisfying intimacy.
How Do I Know If Sex Therapy Might Help?
It’s common to wonder whether what you’re feeling is normal—or a sign you might benefit from sex therapy.
Many couples reach out when intimacy feels less natural or when one partner senses emotional or physical distance.
Some signs you’re not sexually attracted to your partner anymore can include:
- avoiding physical closeness,
- feeling disconnected during intimacy,
- or struggling to talk about what you want.
These experiences don’t always mean something is “wrong.” They’re often invitations to explore what’s changed and how to reconnect.
Other signs you need couples counseling may include:
- frequent misunderstandings,
- mismatched desire, or
- difficulty balancing emotional and physical needs.
Sex therapy offers a supportive, structured space to rebuild connection, deepen communication, and rediscover attraction—together or individually.
If you’re unsure how to know if you need sex therapy, consider whether you and your partner feel safe, seen, and satisfied in your intimate life. If not, talking with a registered psychologist can help you understand what’s happening and rebuild closeness in an authentic and lasting way.
How Do I Get The Most Out Of Therapy?
You don’t need to have the perfect words or a plan—just a willingness to show up, listen, and be honest. Still, a little preparation can help you feel more grounded and confident before your first session.
Before your session:
- Reflect on your goals. Think about what is important to you right now. Do you want to rebuild intimacy, improve communication, or feel more at ease in your body?
- Talk with your partner (if applicable). Share what each of you hopes to gain from therapy and agree to approach sessions with curiosity, not blame.
- Write down your thoughts. Jotting notes or questions beforehand can make it easier to share during your appointment.
Keep an open mind. There’s no right or wrong way to begin. Therapy is a collaborative space to explore, not a test to pass.
After your session:
- Take time to reflect. Notice what stood out to you—insights, emotions, or new perspectives.
- Continue the conversation. Many clients find it helpful to keep communication open with their partner between sessions.
- Be patient with the process. Growth happens gradually. Small shifts in understanding or connection are signs of real progress.
- Use any recommended resources. Your therapist may suggest readings, exercises, or follow-up sessions to help you deepen your work.
At Loving Choices, therapy is about progress, not perfection. Each step before, during, and after your session helps you move toward a more confident, connected, and fulfilling relationship with yourself and your partner.
What Can I Explore in Sex Therapy?
Sex therapy offers a respectful space to talk openly about your sexual health and relationships—on your own or with your partner. It’s a guided conversation where curiosity, understanding, and empathy replace discomfort and silence.
Clients come to sex therapy to explore:
- Differences in desire, arousal, or sexual rhythm
- Confidence and comfort in physical intimacy
- Communication and emotional connection in relationships
- Navigating monogamy, non-monogamy, or relationship dynamics
- LGBTQIA+ relationship support
- Infidelity recovery
- Understanding how health, medication, or stress influence sexual well-being
- Working through performance anxiety or blocks in arousal
- Healing from sexual shame and rediscovering pleasure
- Support for body image, self-esteem, or addiction-related recovery
- Building lasting intimacy grounded in respect and emotional safety
- Reconnecting after life transitions such as parenthood or menopause
Every session is a step toward greater clarity and connection, helping you and your partner experience authentic, safe, and fulfilling intimacy.
