What are Psychoeducational Assessments?

Psychoeducational assessments are a form of psychological or cognitive tests to develop a complete perspective of your or your child’s cognitive abilities. These psychological assessments can provide a diagnosis of a learning disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), developmental disability, and identify any other social, emotional, behavioural, or psychological problems.

These psychoeducational tests help determine if you or your child has any learning or developmental disabilities, or cognitive strengths and abilities. Our counsellor, Jessica, offers specific interventions with children to help them with learning and development at schools in Edmonton. She works with children who are five years old and older, as well as youth and teens.

What are the Scientific Benefits of Psychoeducational Assessments?

Psychoeducational assessments can be used to identify a range of conditions. Many parents spend a lot of time treating their child for the wrong diagnosis, such as “test anxiety”, when the underlying cause may be parental attachment or a hidden learning disorder. In other words, these cognitive tests take the guess work out of counselling.

The American Psychological Association (APA) notes several conditions that can be identified using psychological tests, such as:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Brain injury
  • Dementia
  • Anger management and trouble with interpersonal skills
  • Emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression

Evidence-based research has proven the benefits of psychological tests. The APA asserts that cognitive ability tests are:

  • Effective since they improve the effectiveness of treatment, prevention, or other services related to addressing a condition
  • Cost-effective because they are less costly than other viable alternatives
  • Cost-beneficial as the value of improving treatment exceeds the cost of the assessment itself

How Does a Psychoeducational Assessment Work?

When we conduct a psychology test, the first hour is spent with yourself, or a parent of the child, to complete a social history and family background questionnaires, as well as a semi-structured interview with our counsellor. We discuss your concerns about yourself, or your child, and the reasons for an assessment.

Based on the needs of you or your child, we then administer psychology tests, such as a cognitive function test, an academic test (for psycho-educational assessments or learning assessments), personality measures, and behavioural measures. Once all tests are completed, we prepare a report and present it to you to review and discuss our next steps.
